East Lothian Beekeepers

  In April 1946 the East Lothian Beekeepers Association produced their first Newsletter. At that time there were 124 members each paying a subscription of 5 shillings. Members could borrow one of the association's books and attend demonstrations at apiaries around the county. The highlight of the 1946 season was a lecture held at the Knox Institute, Haddington by Mr W. W. Smith of Innerleithen on the subject of “Modern beekeeping”. Described in the newsletter as “ Scotland 's foremost producer of honey”, Mr Smith, was also famous for developing the “Smith” hive, a type which has now become the most common in Scotland
